**** a deep and rich historical fiction that breathes new life into the beaten-to-death legend of Dracula.

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova (2005)

Kostova weaves her history with three main threads, following an eccentric family and it's affinity for... (surprise) history !

Have you ever enjoyed long hours in a quiet library, deeply passionate about the subject of your research, relishing the increasing mystery as more volumes are pulled from the shelves, and hours pass unnoticed? This book is for you.

Do you have any interest at all in the vampire legend, and do you enjoy a story rich in detail and full of suspense, with romance always lurking in the shadows? Have you ever had TMBG's "Istanbul: (Not Constantinople)" incessantly ringing through your head? This book is for you.

I only gave it 4 stars for two reasons. First, because at times it moved too slowly even for me. Second, because some suspense was limited by obvious conclusions. They must have been obvious if I guessed what was going on - I'm usually pretty gullible and oblivious when I'm sucked into a story.

But overall an excellent book that might very well keep you up past your bedtime.
